Discussion of Alternative Fuels: Part of American History

For many, the discussion surrounding alternative energy is one that is unique to our generation. This is far from true, this discourse has a long history, at least on American soil. The following are a few examples of early though regarding alternative energy from the New York Times piece written by Heather Rogers.

1. 1913: Scientific American posited the following question: "The question of the possible exhaustion of the world’s oil supply deserves the gravest consideration. There is every indication that we are face to face with this possibility.”

2. 1931: Thomas Edison Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone the following: “I’d put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don’t have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that.”

The conversation surrounding alternative fuels is far from over and there still remains lots to do to help the environment and lesson our dependence on fossil fuels, but every little bit even if it's just riding a bicycle when possible.
